    July 2010: Sales Tax Changes

Emblemtek would like to remind our valued customers that on July 1st, 2010, the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia implemented the new Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).  The 13% HST for Ontario and 12% HST in British Columbia replaces the former provincial sales tax and federal goods and services tax (GST) structures.  As a business that sells across Canada, Emblemtek is obligated to charge and collect both of these new tax rates on all goods and services delivered to those provinces.  At the same time, the former 13% HST rate in Nova Scotia was increased to 15% on July 1st, 2010 as well.  The provincial sales tax exemption numbers and certificates that we may have on file for your company are no longer applicable or required.

In summary, as of July 1st, 2010, Emblemtek is using the following taxation rates for goods and services delivered to these provinces, territories and regions:

    • Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba & Prince Edward Island – 5% GST
    • Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories & Nunavut – 5% GST
    • Quebec – 5% GST & 7.5% TVQ
    • British Columbia – 12% HST
    • Ontario, New Brunswick & Newfoundland – 13% HST
    • Nova Scotia – 15% HST
    • United States & International – Tax Exempt

Some businesses and organizations in Canada, operated by federal or provincial government agencies, may be fully or partially tax exempt for some products and services.  In these cases, the purchasing body must submit proof of exemption.
